  • JOÃO, I miss you...JOÃO tenho saudades tuas

    pig
He remindes me of my grandma Beatriz. She loved her pigs. And how sad she was when Winter arrived ... it was time for the killing of the pig. It meant food for the family for a full year! I myself witnessed Grandma running to hide away to cover her hears with her hands to push away the screams of pain of her beloved animal.
I took this pic in the island of Santa MAria a few years ago. I named this pig João in memory of one of my mom's pigs.

Este porquinho faz-me lembrar a minha avó Beatriz.

    John Tavares Potent Portuguese Product

    Louis Pisano

tavaresFrom a very young age, John Tavares has been compared to the «Great One», Wayne Gretzky, and with good reason too. As a member of the Ontario Hockey leagues Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Gretzky scored an OHL record 70 goals as a 16 year old. The record held up for decades, that is until Tavares broke it as a member of the Oshawa Generals in 2006-2007, by scoring an amazing 72 goals, while leading the Oshawa Generals. Tavares went on to one of the most successful OHL careers ever, leading many scouts to believe he would be the first overall pick in this years NHL entry draft. Well, the NHL entry draft has come and gone and with the first overall pick the New York Islanders selected this Portuguese-Canadian and future NHL Superstar as the 1st overall pick of 2009.

John grew up in Oakville Ontario, not only playing hockey but also soccer and lacrosse, excelling in all three sports. His uncle shares the same name ?John Tavares? and is a professional lacrosse player for the Buffalo Bandits. He spent a lot of time around his uncle, who instilled many of the skills that made this young man a phenomenon in the OHL. Johns? close friend and NHL young gun for the Edmonton Oilers, Sam Gagner, son of former NHL speedster Dave Gagner, also played a big role in Tavares? development. Dave would build a rink for the boys in the backyard each year where they could practice all the slick moves they have both used to make it to the highest level in hockey.

Splitting this season between Oshawa and the London Knights Tavares led the OHL in scoring, potting 58 goals, and adding 46 assists, for a total of 104 points. During his OHL career he won five trophies including Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the year in 2006 and CHL Player of the year in 2007. Tavares is considered a blue-chip prospect and it is very likely he will make his NHL debut this season, with that in mind, I think he will have to make room on his trophy shelf for the NHL Rookie of the year award which should find itself beside the other awards at the end of his first professional season.

John TavaresJohn was a key component in Canada?s run to the Gold Medal this year at the 2009 World Juniors. When the dust settled and the tournament was over, Tavares was tied for the lead in tournament scoring with Russian Superstar Nikita Filatov. He not only took home the Gold medal but three other awards from this tournament including World Junior MVP, Top Forward, and was elected to the World Junior All-Star Team. Good thing John has a thick neck, if you hung any more medals and awards around it he might not be able to walk! The future certainly is bright for this talented young man.

He has all the skills, speed and great hands, along with excellent vision on the ice, awareness and outstanding leadership quality, not to mention a drive to be the best at each level he has played. Tavares gained all of his abilities from hard work, study, practice, dedication, and a willingness to learn. Anyone who makes the NHL or the highest level, in whatever sport they choose, needs to have these qualities to succeed.

Celebrate World Pasta Day the “smart” way   - Celebra o Dia da Pasta com esperteza

October 25th is World Pasta Day, a day to celebrate the global love of pasta. From macaroni and spaghetti to lasagne and penne, pasta remains one of the most loved foods in Canada and recent nutritional innovations like Catelli’s Smart pasta with inulin make it one of the cheapest ways to get your family to eat healthy…without them even realizing it. BoyeatsPasta

Since 1995, World Pasta Day has been an international celebration of pasta as a global food, one that is consumed all over the world in varying cuisines on all five continents. While every country celebrates the day individually with its own events, World Pasta Day highlights the universal love of pasta due to its great taste, one that is embraced by both children and gastronomy aficionados, and its ability to meet every dynamic and healthy lifestyle.

“Pasta is one of Canada’s favourite comfort foods and has a tradition of being honest, delicious, and satisfying,” says Chef Massimo Capra, owner of Toronto’s renowned Italian restaurants Mistura and Sopra, and one of the best Italian chefs in Canada. “Pasta is a universally loved food. There is nothing better than gathering friends and family around the dinner table and celebrating life and each other with a plate of pasta.”

This year’s celebration theme is Pasta Meals on Every Family Table and Catelli, Canada’s number one pasta manufacturer, is calling on Canadians to celebrate World Pasta Day with a Smart Pasta Family and Friends Party to help feed Canadian children in need.

Every civilazation has its own proverbs. The ancient Chinese used proverbs to teach their children good manners and to help them learn the proper way of doing things. Excerpt from The Analects of Confucius, c.400 BCE:

    •  Do not do unto others, what you would not want others to do to you
    •  If you make a mistake and do not correct it, this is called a mistake

    MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA em Toronto

Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira has celebrated his 100th birthday in 2008. Incredible as it sounds, the nonagenarian not only remains an active filmmaker but is one of the most vital and unorthodox directors working anywhere in the world today. Oliveira directed his first film, the lyrical documentary Douro, Faina Fluvial, in 1931, and the 45 films he has made since are marked by an astonishing rigor, erudition and wit. Collectively they span the silents (his aforementioned debut) to the present. He has won plaudits at major film festivals such as Cannes and Venice, and while lesser-known in the United States, is recognized in Europe as a film master on a par with such artistic giants as Roberto Rossellini and Robert Bresson. Aniki-Bóbó is a story of two Porto schoolboys who are both in love of their fetching classmate Teresinha, prompting the shyer boy Carlitos to steal the doll the girl covets from the Lojas das Tentações ("Shop of Temptations"). Lurking under this tale of a children's love triangle are darker undertones?like the menace of authoritarianism connoted in the words "Always follow the right path" stenciled on Carlitos's schoolbag? have led many critics to read it as a  critique of the Salazar regime.
