This technique was later developed by artisans and is now recreated in the field of plastic arts by the Azorean Ricardo Machado.<br>About my Artwork says Ricardo, " I learned the traditional scrimshaw with the artist João Baptista (Azorean scrimshander). The scrimshaw became a passion and an addiction. After developed scrimshaw on whale's teeth, due to an ecologist option and in order to conserve wildlife, I changed and started to recreate this craft technique in the field of plastic arts using different materials (scrimshaw on canvas). The canvas is prepared with quality plaster and then the surface is engraved and finished with black india ink or watercolor. I also use a distinct and expressive technique and due to inks used and paint with the canvas on the easel the inks oozes by the canvas. This is my way to maintain the scrimshaw alive.”<br>R. The letter of agreement will be signed by the Consul General of Portugal, Julio Vilela, and TCDSB Director Bruce Rodrigues and TCDSB Associate Director Angela Gauthier. The <a href="http://www.blog.ca/media/photo/kids_dance_2/6364882" title="kids dance 2"><img src="http://data7.blog.de/media/882/6364882_cac15d06d5_s.jpeg" alt="kids dance 2"></a>and Instituto Camões are providing Toronto students with an opportunity to experience Portuguese culture and to strengthen the already strong personal ties between the people of Portugal and the people of Canada Students will earn dual credits from Ontario and the Institute Camões. The students will travel to Portugal in the summer of 2013 to be taught Ontario Ministry of Education courses by TCDSB employed qualified teachers and to experience Portugal, its people and culture. TCDSB teacher Lisa Gomes, who will be the program co-ordinator, has been the driving force behind the agreement, which lays a solid foundation for future opportunities and partnerships with the Institute Camoes and the Portuguese Consulate, such as a semester overseas for TCDSB students and/or a semester with the TCDSB for Portuguese students. The promotion of Portuguese language abroad falls under the responsibility of the Instituto Camões, which is under the jurisdiction of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Services to the Institute are provided by the Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto.<br> Students will be responsible for all travel and accommodation costs incurred, however, the TCDSB is exploring scholarship opportunities. CAsa Acoresjpg"></span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>IMF – When did the project begun and why?</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span><span> <br></span>Chantel Espinola - Last year in October in Casa dos Açores do Ontário, a group of students conceived a project to form a folklore group representative of the nine islands of the Azores. It began as a bet between Sr Carlos Botelho and Chirs Frietas over a quick few drinks at the Casa’s restaurant, Ilhas de Bruma, and the idea quickly turned serious. After six, long months of group practice, Grupo Folclórico Pérolas do Atlântico was ready to be born, perform, and present itself to the community. The group successfully has 24 members (18 youth) ranging from ages 9 to 70. This past Saturday, our dinner has been organized with the goal of raising funds in order for us to purchase some of the many diverse traditional costumes that represent the  various islands. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their presence and support at our dinner.</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>Some of the group’s primary objectives include to demonstrate to the community the traditions and typical dances of the Azores, promote interest and pride amongst the Luso-Canadian youth of their cultural roots, and to establish a united group of friends where people of all ages may share and shine in their talents. With that said, we practise every Sunday at 3:30PM at Casa Dos Açores and welcome everyone to join our family.</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span> </span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>IMF – Future projects?     </span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span><br>Chantel Espinola -  The Grupo Folclórico Pérolas do Atlântico is not the youth group of Casa dos Açores, yet we are a group of all ages who share the same interest in expressing our Portuguese culture through traditional music and dance. Furthermore, the long-term goal of the group is to promote the diverse mixture of traditions and folklore of the various islands of the archipelago of the Azores, which include São Miguel, Faial, Santa Maria, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa, Terceira, Flores and Corvo; all of which serve as our fountains of inspiration. We hope to acquire traditional clothing for all our of members and plan to travel as a group to the Acores as of next year. He obtained gold medals for all four events. Miguel will be swimming as part of the Portuguese National Team in July and competing in the European Championships in Germany with athletes of more than 30 countries.</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>With a wall full of medals, many of gold, Miguel looks forward to the future, while studying mechanical engineering, playing flute and of course or at the<span>  </span>York Swim Club. He is a very disciplined swimmer, not only in swimming but in life too. He currently holds the Canadian record in 200 breaststroke in the SB9 category, along with 3 Portuguese records in 200 Individual Medley for the SM10 category, 100 Breaststroke in the SB9 category, and 400 freestyle in the S10 category. At the moment, he is getting ready for the European Championships in July, followed by the Speedo Can-Am competition held in Ottawa. “</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>Miguel Nascimento é um jovem de 14 anos a viver em Toronto cuja grande paixão é a natação: treina diariamente duas vezes por dia e já teve a possibilidade de se classificar para ir aos jogos paraolimpicos pelo Canadá. Todavia, a oportunidade fugiu-lhe por questões de nacionalidade. Um acaso da sorte levou-o a conhecer um treinador brasileiro que lhe possibilitou contactos com um treinador português. Actualmente, o jovem representa Portugal e em Julho vai estar na sua primeira<span>  </span>competição Internacional defendendo a bandeira Portuguesa na Alemanha.</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span>A nadar desde os oito anos, o Miguel abraçou uns anos mais tarde o desporto de forma profissional e garante que o treino diário e difícil. Mas fá-lo por gosto e porque quer chegar longe na natação internacional.
